As a member of leadership, part of your job is to help the employees under your purview reach their goals. Some of those goals can be accomplished in the short term, while others might take a bit longer. Either way, it’s up to you to have tactical and practical strategies for helping your employees achieve them.

Here are just three ideas to help your employees reach their short- and long-term goals:

Help employees set SMART goals.

Sit down with your employees and talk about what they’re looking for out of their jobs and careers. Work together to come up with some goals and follow the SMART system to make sure the goals are valid. SMART goals are:

  • Specific: When goals are too broad, it’s hard to break them into small chunks in order to easily achieve them. Make sure your employees’ goals are as specific as possible.
  • Measurable: Goals need to be able to measured quantitatively. That way, your employees know how far along they are and how far they have to go.
  • Achievable: It’s important that goals are realistic enough to be achieved. Make them unrealistic, and your employees will only wind up disappointed.
  • Relevant: Think about how the goal is relevant to the employee’s career, both in the short and long term.
  • Time-bound: A goal with no end-date is too abstract and is likely to never be achieved. Set a timeframe for goals to be accomplished.

Provide resources.

As a leader, you probably have some resources and a budget to invest in employee growth and development. This is a great way to help your employees achieve their goals, whether it’s moving up the ladder, learning new skills, or becoming a member of a new department. Consider purchasing books, conference passes, online courses, or other resources to help your employees grow and advance.

Set up a mentor program.

Whether it’s inside or outside of your company, setting employees up with a mentor is a fantastic way to help them achieve their goals. Mentors can help guide employees through their career, give them advice on certain career moves, and help them learn new skills or knowledge. Of course, you can also be a mentor yourself.
