The Importance of Nurses Day and Nurses Week

Every year, Nurses Day on May 6 launches a full week of appreciation, ending on May 12.
Nurses Week is more than just a celebration. It is a meaningful recognition of the incredible impact nurses make in patients’ lives every single day.

Because of their dedication and compassion, nurses form the backbone of healthcare. Therefore, their contributions deserve to be celebrated not only during one week, but all year long.

Nurses Day was first officially recognized in 1954, marking the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to care for wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Over time, this recognition expanded into a full week devoted to honoring the work, leadership, and commitment of nurses nationwide.

How National Recognition Day for Nurses Began

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially establishing National Recognition Day for Nurses on May 6. Meanwhile, the celebration grew into a full week, ending on May 12—Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

Her legacy of leadership, innovation, and compassion continues to inspire nurses across the world today. Consequently, Nurses Week remains one of the most important celebrations in healthcare.
