How Nurses Week Began
Nurses Week traces back to the legacy of Florence Nightingale. In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland from the U.S. Department of Health suggested a day to honor nurses. Although it wasn’t declared then, President Nixon officially proclaimed a week-long celebration in 1974.
