Travel nursing is an exciting and rewarding career path that allows you to see the country while utilizing your medical skills and experience to help others.

One common question that comes up when nurses are considering taking on a travel assignment is this: Can I bring my significant other along? 

The short answer is yes, you can. It depends on your circumstances and what both of you are looking for, but there’s nothing wrong with bringing along your partner or spouse when you go on a travel nursing assignment. 

How does travel nursing work, exactly? 

If you’re not completely familiar with travel nursing, let’s take a moment to break it down. Travel nurses work contracts that range anywhere from a few weeks to six months or more. (The typical travel contract lasts about 12 or 13 weeks.) Travel nurses work closely with their recruiter and their agency to be put on assignments where they’re needed, whether it’s a hospital or some other type of medical facility. Then, they can choose when and where they take their next assignment.  

Travel nurses enjoy the approach of travel nursing because of the flexibility it offers, as well as the chance to work with a variety of teams and live in new cities all over the country.  

Why bring your spouse along? 

To put it simply, it’s exciting to bring your spouse along as you’re traveling for work. You’ll get to experience new places and people together, and plan out your next assignments to go where you’d like. Plus, because travel nurses typically work in shifts, you can plan vacation time or day trips to go on with your spouse when you aren’t working.  

What spouses are best suited for travel assignments? 

Of course, a partner who has a work-from-home or remote arrangement, or runs their own business that can be performed remotely, is probably best suited to come along with you on your travel assignments. Of course, the person you bring along should be ready for adventure and a whole lot of fun, too.

Travel nursing gives you the opportunity to work as a part of a variety of teams and in a variety of different healthcare settings, from busy emergency rooms to specialty clinics, large hospital systems, and everything in between. That’s not only a good thing for your hands-on experience, it helps build your resume to make you more attractive to hiring managers in the future.  

You can choose the weather you like.  

No, you can’t control the weather. But travel nursing does allow you to select assignments in locations that you desire, and in climates that you like. Head south in the winter to enjoy the sun and palm trees; stay in New England during the fall to experience those lovely autumn colors. There’s something to be said for moving around as you please to enjoy the weather you like best.  

You can find employment if your partner needs to relocate.  

If your spouse or partner needs to relocate for work, or if you decide you’d like to move to a new city together for a change of pace, you don’t have to stay behind until you find a permanent job in your new city. Simply talk to your recruiter about working a temporary gig in the new city, and you’re set.
